What Is Pay Per Click?

by | Jan 1, 2011 | Q & A, Technical Help

Pay Per Click is simple.

It means you pay, when you get a click.

It is a form of internet advertising where a person “clicks” on your ad and is delivered to your website.

With Pay Per Click (PPC), your business runs an ad on a search engine, and you pay every time someone clicks on your ad. It’s that simple.

The ad that you display is triggered to show when a user types “keywords” related to your business into a search engine.

Here is how it works:

In a Search Engine (Google, Bing, etc.)

  1. A person types in a keyword or phrase related to your business.
  2. Your ad is displayed alongside the free results.
  3. When a person clicks on your ad, they are directed to your website.
  4. You pay the search engine for that click.

Pay Per Click (PPC) is a very powerful source of marketing for 3 main reasons:

  1. You only pay for results.
You only pay if someone actually clicks on your ad and is delivered right to your website. In most other advertising you pay for people just to “see” your ad. In PPC you pay only when the actual results are delivered to you.
  2. People visit your website at the EXACT TIME they need your service or product.
Since a person clicks on your ad after typing in keywords related to your business (keywords that you choose in advance), you know they are actively interested in what your business offers. When you pay for a click in Pay Per Click, you are reaching a person at exactly the right time to “make the sale”.
  3. You can reach your precise target market.
Through the keywords that you choose that trigger your ad, combined with the way your ad is written, you can reach exactly who you really need to reach. This focuses the results to give you the best return on your investment possible. You can go directly to your target market, and leave out the rest.
    OTHER FACTORS

How Pay Per Click works in theory is the simple part.

Making it work the best that it can in the real world is more complicated. Of course, having some experience and knowledge in exactly how these systems work provides for the best results.

That is why it is most cost effective to use the services of an experienced professional, rather than “trial and error”, which can cost you extra time and money.

Since Google is the largest search engine by far, it is the main one that businesses use when they effectively use Pay Per Click. Between Google and Bing (MSN) you can reach the vast majority of internet users in the most efficient way.

How much money you pay for each click depends on a variety of factors. The two main factors that determine how much you will pay are, (1) how much competition there is in your business area, and (2) how well your PPC account is set up.

Pay Per Click works well. It is very sophisticated and efficient, and is a model that delivers actual, measurable results that can build your business.

Once a business realizes how powerful and effective this advertising is, they never leave. Often, my clients drop other forms of advertising like the Yellow Pages, once they see the results from PPC.

What is Pay Per Click?

I said that, “It means you pay, when you get a click”.

Perhaps I should have said, “It means you pay, when a qualified prospect is delivered directly to your website, at precisely the time when they are most in need of your business”.

Pay Per Click can drop people off right at your doorstep, ready to buy.

The rest is up to you.
